In looking back I realize that each of the pieces created for the Michener Museum show can be traced back to Arabesque. This pivotal piece in my portfolio was created as a model in my last year of graduate work and wasn’t finished until almost a decade later. It has become something of a “breeder piece” for much of my future work. What exactly is a “breeder” piece? In my final Master’s thesis critique at University of Pennsylvania, Maurice Lowe said something to me that has rung true over the years. ”There is nothing wrong with going back into your past. Mine the work — what’s real will stay powerful and meaningful. Breeder pieces will create many new generations of work...”
